The mission of Believers Bassmen is to provide a Christ-centered environment where men can grow in faith, build lasting relationships, and share God’s love through fellowship, service, and the sport of bass fishing.
Our Story
Founded in 1984, Believers Bassmen began as a vision shared by longtime friends Johnny Speedling and Tony Byrd. At the time, Johnny served as Minister of Music and Youth, while Tony was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at McDowell Road Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
Through their involvement in organizing and participating in the church’s brotherhood fishing trips, Johnny and Tony recognized an opportunity to combine their passion for bass fishing with their desire to share God’s love with men across the greater Jackson area. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something much more impactful.
By opening participation to the public and using organized tournament formats, the original Speedybird Bass Club proved to be an effective and meaningful outreach. As the club’s purpose became clear, it soon adopted the name Believers Bassmen—reflecting its strong emphasis on Christian ministry, fellowship, and brotherhood.
Today, Believers Bassmen brings together believers from many Christian denominations to fish and travel throughout the bass-rich waters of Mississippi and Louisiana. Through this shared fellowship, members both minister to others and are ministered to themselves, forming lasting friendships and memories that strengthen the bond of brotherhood with each gathering.
Believers Bassmen provides a welcoming, non-threatening environment where men can experience and share God’s love alongside fellow Christian outdoorsmen. As we enjoy God’s creation through the exciting sport of bass fishing, each member’s spiritual walk is encouraged and strengthened. We believe God intended for us to have fun while glorifying Him—and we invite you to join us.
